Leon La Grange started his career at the Department of Post and Telecommunication as a learner technician. He soon became a lecturer in Telecommunication at the Paardeneiland and Roggebaai Training Centres. Transplanted to the HO Region, he worked at the Department’s laboratory as a lab technician and then senior lab technician while completing his studies for Technologist. A move to the field of digital switching communication technology followed.

During this, he became active in the Society of Telkom Engineers (STE) and served on the Head Office Branch Committee, was elected as chairman of the branch and finally served as President of the Society. In 1990 he moved to Telkom’s IT environment and practiced Line and Project Management for several large IT and Business Projects. He took early retirement in 2005 and opted to pursue a private business venture.

As part of the duties of the Chairman of the Head Office Branch Committee of the STE, a seat on the then Board of Directors of TeleMed was mandatory. Duties of board members were simpler in 1992 and seats were reserved for all member representative bodies. Mr La Grange had the privilege of serving on this body as a nominated board member and when nominations were abolished in 2000, he became a duly elected member of the newly formed Board of Trustees. When TeleMed was placed under provisional curatorship in 2002, he was part of the small group of Trustees that opposed the motion in the High Court and won the action whereafter he was elected as Chairman of the TeleMed Board of Trustees. The almost 17 years on the board, has served to equip him with a comprehensive understanding of the governance and operational structures of TeleMed.

Mr La Grange relinquished his position as Chairman of the TeleMed Board of Trustees in 2008 when he was asked to fulfill the position as Chief Executive Officer of TeleMed.
